LAMMC
Cereals, oilseed, maize and sugar beet grow across this lowland, on some of the most productive farmland in the country. Permanent grasslands still exist here, but fewer of them each year.
Field consolidation has absorbed permanent grasslands and semi-natural habitats into larger production units. The result is a landscape that produces well and shelters little.
There is still room here for wildlife. What is missing are the structures that would let it stay.
FIREFLIES works on how grasslands, hedgerows, buffer strips and flowering strips can be brought back into productive systems, and what that costs, both in money and in management.
Where these elements go, and whether they earn their place on a working farm, is worked out with the farmers themselves. The project also examines how eco-schemes perform here, and whether they support the changes they are meant to encourage.
The Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAMMC) leads the demo region, evaluating eco-schemes and engaging farmers across the lowland.
The Lithuanian Agricultural Advisory Service (LAAS) runs the advisory side, supporting farmers through implementation and analysing what these transitions mean economically.
