Farming with nature
from the ground up
FIREFLIES works with farmers, scientists and policymakers across five European regions to turn biodiversity restoration into practical, lasting farming decisions.

FIREFLIES brings together farmers, scientists, advisors, policymakers and local organisations to understand what European agricultural landscapes need, test restoration measures in real farm conditions, and turn field evidence into knowledge that can support better decisions — on the farm and in policy.
Agricultural landscapes are living systems. What pollinates, nests, decomposes, stores water, holds soil in place and connects one habitat to the next shapes how resilient they are.
The EU Nature Restoration Regulation sets a new direction for restoring degraded ecosystems, including agricultural landscapes. FIREFLIES contributes to this effort by working across five demo regions to understand which restoration practices can work in real farming conditions, what support farmers need to implement them, and how evidence from the field can inform better public incentives, policy recommendations and restoration pathways.
FIREFLIES follows a pathway to understand each landscape, identify what can change, and generate evidence for restoration that works in practice.
Mapping how each landscape works today, this means farming systems, land use and local conditions, across the five demo regions.
Farmers, advisors and local organisations help identify needs, barriers and opportunities for change, before anything is designed.
Bioacoustic sensors and transect walks track pollinators, birds and other signs of ecological condition.
Farmers and project partners work together to select measures that respond to each landscape and farming system.
Selected practices are implemented with farmers, generating practical knowledge on management, costs, barriers and what makes adoption possible.
FIREFLIES assesses outcomes across all four dimensions, including trade-offs and co-benefits.
Results are translated into practical resources, and policy recommendations to support farmers, advisors and decision-makers. This evidence will support the nature restoration policy, including the EU Nature Restoration Regulation.
